I am a racist

I am a racist. Racism is deeply embedded in the white psyche. I have been a privileged white male for nearly seventy years. But I know better.

I am a racist. Racism is deeply embedded in the white psyche. I have been a privileged white male for nearly seventy years.

But I know better, thanks to my parents’ teaching and, especially, thanks to the teaching and example of Jesus. And that, the example of the right-wing branch of the American church notwithstanding, is the way of love.

I try to live according to what I know rather than according to the demons that churn in my gut. Sometimes I succeed.

I am a photographer, walker, and sometime paddler, a theologically-educated geek living in Rochester, NY. Once upon a time I was an Army helicopter jockey in Alaska.

I started with film, switched to digital, then went back to classic film cameras.

With major back surgery in August 2019 and bunion repair in January 2020 now behind me, I am gearing up to start Appalachian Trail NOBO in June, 2021 to celebrate my seventy-first birthday. Blogging for The Trek.

A person cannot help where they were born or how they were raised; that is not racism. Racism is how you treat others even when you do know better. We are all born with a bias; but we can rise above it.
